Mahakala, meaning "Great Time" in Sanskrit，is an essential deity in Vajrayana Buddhism. Known as Daheitian in Chinese and Daikokuten in Japanese, Mahakala is revered across all schools of Tibetan Buddhism. He is a powerful protector of the Dharma (Buddhist teachings) and a fierce embodiment of compassion, often regarded as an emanation of Avalokiteshvara (the Bodhisattva of Compassion) or Chakrasamvara (a deity symbolizing union and bliss).

Mahakala is commonly depicted as black in color, which symbolizes his all-embracing nature, representing the absorption and dissolution of all colors, forms, and names into his essence. Black also signifies the ultimate or absolute reality, beyond all qualities and forms, reflecting the concept of nirguna (without attributes). Some variations depict him with multiple arms, different head formations, or in white, with each representation conveying unique qualities of wisdom and protection.

Typically, Mahakala is shown with a crown of five skulls, symbolizing the transformation of the five kleshas (negative afflictions) into the five wisdoms. His fierce appearance, often accompanied by a variety of symbols and implements, reinforces his role as a guardian of spiritual truths.
